The area is known among others for the Alonissos National Marine Park, the largest protected marine area in Europe. The Park includes 6 smaller islands (Peristera, Kyra Panagia, Psathoura, Piperi, Skatzoura and Yura), it is of particular scientific and cultural interest, and is ideal for free diving, wildlife observation, amateur photography and other activities.
The limited degree of human intervention and the excellent state of the natural environment make the landscape and marine areas of the Park an ideal refuge for many endangered species, such as the Mediterranean monk seal Monachus monachus and various species of dolphins and whales.
